Another Side of Life

Hanging Heart 1
By Barbara Eknoian

If you look past the poverty
of the town,
the run-down houses,
the oil-stained streets,
view families through
their lighted windows
see them laugh
while watching TV,
you might see
another side of life,
another kind of beauty.
Watch the young father
reach out to steady
his baby’s first steps.
See the mother,
shoulders bent, leaning
over the kitchen table
to help her children
with their homework.
She hopes
they’ll surpass her
in their education,
be able to raise
their children
in the suburbs
choose to break bread
with their brothers
because they’ll always
be there for each other
If you look past the poverty
of the town, and picture
future prospects,
then you might see
another kind of beauty.

From her book, Why I Miss New Jersey.
