in this moment

By Kelsey Bryan-Zwick

By Steven Hendrix

in thirteen years
we’ve learned the same things about ourselves
over and over

we’ve landed on incompatible
time and again
only to fall upon try again once more

what we’ve finally been able to accept
after all this time
is that the laughter and the darkness
will continue to take their turns
and we can embrace them both
without losing ourselves

so tonight
we finish our meal
wash our dishes
flip the tv off
brush our teeth
lie down next to each other
embrace
and don’t concern ourselves
with whatever
tomorrow will bring

  1. I like this poem very much. I like the idea of living for the moments of connection, of not expecting the impossible perfect match. Perhaps those moments of connection are all we have.
