Despertar 1
By Donna Hilbert

The pear tree in the parkway flowers white.

Mockingbird flashes his white blossom
from treetop to fencepost.

The woman says, pear blossoms smelling like semen.
The man says, car alarm in the mockingbird’s song.

In this climate, falling blossoms are the only snow.

Mockingbird is king of the night,
as long as he sings, as far as his song reaches.
